Yoga comes from the Sanskrit root "yuj," meaning "to yoke," or to unite. Yoga means union. Yoga is an ancient art and science based on the knowledge that all life is connected. Yoga teaches us how to achieve this unitive state through the eight limbs of yoga (ashtanga: 8-limbed). The eight limbs consist of: 1 & 2) yama and niyama (moral guidelines)...to help the yogi to live ethically and keep him in harmony with nature 3) asana (somatic practices)... to keep the body healthy and strong and in harmony with nature 4) pranayama (breathing exercises)... to explore the connection between mind & breath and better understand the body's subtle energy system 5) pratyahara (sense withdraw)... to go within the mind & body 6) dharana (concentration)... to steady the mind & body 7 & 8) dhyana and samadi (meditation & place of highest Self or union)... to take the yogi into the innermost recesses of his soul |
